Tangy Madurai Fish Curry Recipe Without Coconut – மதுரை மீன் குழம்பு

Many of us don’t prepare fish curry as it will take more time for preparation and cooking. But it is not the fact. It may be not as simple as a fry with a instant fry mix but it is healthy and tasty.

The recipe given below is prepared with simple ingredients. As both tomato and tamarind pulp is used, the curry will be tangy.

Other fish recipes – Fish pepper fry, Fish baked with homemade masala, Fish fry with homemade masala, Fish puttu, Nethili meen manga kozhambu.

INGREDIENTS 

  1. Fish – 300 gms
  2. Onion – 2
  3. Tomato – 3
  4. Tamarind pulp – 2 tbsp
  5. Ginger garlic paste – 1/2 tbsp
  6. Fennel seeds – 1 tsp
  7. Coriander powder – 2 tbsp
  8. Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
  9. Red chili powder – 1 tsp
  10. Curry leaves – 2 sprigs
  11. Salt – 1/2 tspfish curry (1)

FOR TEMPERING

  1. Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
  2. Curry leaves – 1 sprig
  3. Tomato – 3 pieces

PROCEDURE 

  1. Heat oil in a kadai.fish curry (2)
  2. Add fennel seeds and ginger-garlic paste to it. Saute till the raw smell goes.fish curry (3)
  3. Next add chopped onions to it.fish curry (4)
  4. Once the onion becomes golden brown, add curry leaves.fish curry (5)
  5. Now add chopped tomatoes.fish curry (6)
  6. Add salt to it. Saute till the tomato becomes mushy.fish curry (7)
  7. Then add coriander powder, red chili powder and turmeric powder. Cook it for 2 minutes.fish curry (8)
  8. Allow the mixture to cool. Transfer the mixture to a mixer grinder.fish curry (9)
  9. Grind it into a fine paste. Keep it aside.fish curry (10)
  10. Meanwhile for tempering, heat oil in a kadai. Add mustard seeds to it.fish curry (11)
  11. Once the mustard seed splutters add curry leaves.fish curry (12)
  12. Next add the grind mixture to it.fish curry (13)
  13. Now add the tomato pieces.fish curry (14)
  14. Add tamarind pulp & little water to it. Cook it for 2 minutes.fish curry (15)
  15. Finally add the washed fish pieces to it. Cook it for 5 minutes in low flame.fish curry (16)
  16. Yummy fish curry is ready to serve hot with rice.fish curry (17)

NOTE

  1. Adjust the seasoning as per the taste.
  2. Any kind of fish can be used.
  3. If desired coconut can also be added to the mixture. Saute and grind it along the tomato mixture.
  4. Coconut oil can be replaced for refined oil while cooking this dish. It will give a added flavor to the dish.
